The word ''Trauma'' is overly used these days, I missed the class that's so traumatic how will I pass, I missed the train or I forget my phone that's so traumatic what will I do now. Because the word Trauma is overly used in different scenarios people are confused and some don't even know what trauma actually means.

The meaning of the word trauma means response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences. Most people think trauma is a response to a tragic event for example accident, rape, loss of control, betrayal, abuse of power, helplessness. But how do we even describe a tragic event?

All humans are unique so what might be a normal event to me could be a tragic event to you. We need to understand that trauma is very subjective as we are dealing with humans. We all know that all humans are unique, which means everybody is going to respond differently to events happening in their lives.

So how do we recognise trauma then? Might be the next question popping up in your mind. Well to keep it straight and simple and understandable, any event that is stopping you from moving on in life and is putting you in a fight, flight or freeze could be a trauma response. But sometimes if it's an unresolved trauma from the past it might not be obvious where the trigger or the trauma response is coming from.

Some people start questioning themselves why am I responding this way as consciously it doesn't make any sense, I am grown up, I have moved on from my past so why am I feeling uneasy. anxious, having panic attacks, experiencing fear, feeling low without any reasoning.

Pay attention to triggers. When something triggers you ask yourself, why is it triggering me?

Ask yourself the following questions :

Do you constantly feel that you are not good enough?

Do you hold back from what you truly want?

Do you feel frightened or anxious about the idea of what people would think about the real you?

Do you strive for perfection or procrastinate a lot?

Do you often feel hopeless, lost, lonely, or like a child?

Do you feel ashamed or guilty?

Do you feel stuck in destructive and toxic patterns regarding your life?

Do you yearn for a way out, wishing things were simpler or happier yet fear that as well?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions your might be dealing with ''unresolved trauma'' Sometimes it can be hard to recognize and accept '' unprocessed trauma'' especially when one believes that he or she has moved on in life. It’s very important to understand that an event that you have experienced as trauma is imprinted in your subconscious mind.

Consciously you might think you have moved on but when a similar event takes place or something related to that one specific event happens, you will be triggered. and this cycle will keep on repeating until you have healed from it. Simply because an "unresolved trauma" impacts your current experiences, symptoms, and relationships. Freud (founder of psychoanalysis) once said we have a “compulsion to repeat”, even if we try not to. That is why you might find yourself in relationships that remind you of those that traumatized you in the past.
